Balayage rose to popularity in an instant – and it’s easy to see why. The unique colour application technique delivers the most gorgeously subtle highlighted hair, and sits alongside ombré as the most popular hair trend this year.
We’ve also seen a huge number of bolder colour trends come back around, from rose gold hair to grey. And this latest look, ash balayage, combines both balayage and grey hues to create a stunning in-salon option.
What is ash balayage?
Ash balayage was first tapped to be one of the biggest 2017 hair colour trends on Pinterest. The classic balayage technique is combined with lighter, ashy tones to leave the hair looking almost silvery-grey. Like the original balayage, roots are dark before the colour becomes lighter and lighter, finishing in ash blonde, grey tones on the ends. This incredibly pretty effect has taken off in salons and on social media in previous months, and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.
How do I get ash balayage?
This is definitely a technique best left to the in-salon professionals. It is offered in a number of places, and Redken even offer a version of ash balayage which they call ‘smokey ombré,’ which is inspired by smokey eye makeup.
“Smokey Ombré is a way to think about haircolour as makeup,” Josh Wood, Redken Global Color Creative Director, comments. “[It’s] like contouring or shadowing or strobing. It’s a way of adding light and shade, which can make any hairstyle look amazing,” he continues.
Redken offers three versions of the smokey ombré, from the ‘whisper’ (a subtle silver hue) to ‘shout’ (a bold haze of violet). Visit redken.co.uk for more details.
