The 33-year-old has penned the soundtrack to Blade Runner 2022, which fills fans in on events between the original movie, set in 2019, and the forthcoming sequel Blade Runner 2049.
The animation is directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and is the third companion piece to be released ahead of Ridley Scott’s follow-up to his 1982 science-fiction classic.
Flying Lotus, real name Steven Ellison, told fans he had penned the score on Twitter.
“I was watching the old blade runner (sic) every night earlier in the year and they hit me up to do this project on a rare rainy day n la (Los Angeles),” he wrote.
Revealing his delight at scoring a Blade Runner project he added, “When I saw a rough cut of 2022 the temp(orary) music was from my past albums. Seeing Blade Runner imagery set to my music was a beautiful feeling.”
Original Blade Runner star Harrison Ford, Jared Leto, and Ryan Gosling lead the cast of Blade Runner 2049, which is set 30 years after the first film.
Hans Zimmer, Johann Johannsson and Benjamin Wallfisch were signed up to score the movie, but Johannsson has reportedly left the project.
Leto also stars in one of the short companion films, 2036: Nexus Dawn, while Guardians of the Galaxy actor Dave Bautista appears in the third, 2048: Nowhere to Run.
Flying Lotus released his own debut film as a director earlier this year (17).
His movie Kuso, a post-apocalyptic horror set in Los Angeles, shocked audiences at the Sundance Film Festival, triggering a mass walkout due to its shocking imagery.
Blade Runner 2049 debuts in cinemas on 6 October (17).
