The Alien and Repo Man star, who recently appeared in the Twin Peaks revival as cranky trailer park manager Carl, died on Friday afternoon (15Aug17) at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.
His career spanned more than six decades and also included roles in One From the Heart, The Godfather Part II, Cool Hand Luke, The Straight Story, Paris, Texas, and Wild at Heart.
He also enjoyed a musical career and fronted The Harry Dean Stanton Band.
A hero to stars like Jack Nicholson, Kris Kristofferson, and Rob Lowe, Stanton made his name as an oddball or a loser character actor in more than 200 movies, including cult favourites like Two-Lane Blacktop, Cisco Pike, and Pretty in Pink, in which he portrayed the father of leading lady Molly Ringwald’s character.
A U.S. Navy hero during World War II, his acting career didn’t really take off until the 1970s, and he didn’t become a big name until Wim Wenders cast him in his 1984 drama Paris, Texas. Harry Dean won acclaim for his role as leading man Travis Henderson, opposite Nastassja Kinski.
The film went on to win the grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and turned Harry Dean into big name overnight. He was 58 at the time. He followed Paris,Texas up with another signature role in Repo Man, in which he played the boss of an auto repossession company.
Such was his cult status among film fans that he was honoured with his own Harry Dean Stanton Festival in his native Kentucky.
Fittingly his final film, Lucky, serves as a tribute to the actor and features his longtime fried and Twin Peaks, Wild At Heart, and The Straight Story director David Lynch, who presented Stanton with the inaugural Harry Dean Stanton Award at the Los Angeles Vidiots prizegiving last year (16). The film is released later this month (Sep17).
He never married but enjoyed a long relationship with actress Rebecca De Mornay, who was 35 years his junior. He often joked that she left him for Tom Cruise.
Lynch paid tribute to the actor on Friday, posting a photo of his pal on the Twin Peaks: The Return set and writing: “The great Harry Dean Stanton has left us. There went a great one.
“There’s nobody like Harry Dean Stanton. Everybody loved him. And with good reason. He was a great actor (Actually beyond great) – and a great human being – so great to be around him!!! You are really going to be missed Harry Dean!!! Loads of love to you wherever you are now!!!”
Fellow filmmaker John Carpenter also paid tribute to the late star, tweeting: “Harry Dean Stanton was a wonderful man, kind and full of humor. He was also a great actor. Goodbye, Harry Dean. Rest in peace.”
And his Pretty in Pink and Two and a Half Men co-star Jon Cryer wrote: “Was an honor, man. #RIPHarryDeanStanton.”
