The city of Sunnyvale announced earlier this week that Kent Steffens will serve as interim city manager. He will take over for Deanna Santana, who is leaving next month to become Santa Clara’s city manager.
Steffens, who has been Sunnyvale’s assistant city manager since September 2014, has more than 30 years of experience with public agencies, including time in Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Foster City. During his career, he’s had interim stints as city manager and assistant city manager. He’s also been the head of a public works department.
Santana’s last day with Sunnyvale will be Oct. 1. She served as the city manager for 3½ years. She announced her departure to staff in an email on Aug. 22. The city of Santa Clara confirmed the following day that she would be taking over for acting city manager Rajeev Batra.
According to a Santa Clara staff report, Santana will receive an annual salary of $372,886 along with a $3,750 monthly housing allowance and a $550 car allowance as well as other benefits.
Meanwhile, Sunnyvale officials announced Friday that staff is looking for a recruitment firm that will manage a national recruitment process to find a permanent city manager. Interviews are expected to be done in November and December for the position.
Applications will be online at sunnyvale.ca.gov by early October.
