Elon Musk and Amber Heard apparently have a relationship like a lot of other people — which is on-again, off-again and which has its “ups and downs.”
But from a joint statement the Tesla CEO and “Aquaman” actress released Friday, it’s hard to tell if their relationship is back on — though they were spotted hanging out together in Australia this week, a few days after they confirmed they had broken up on social media, Us Weekly said.
What the two will say is that the “distance” has been “really tough” on their relationship but that they have “the utmost respect for one another.”
“All relationships have their ups and downs, of course,” the statement says.
Over the past few months, Heard, 31, has been in Australia filming “Aquaman,” while the Los Angeles-based Musk, 46, has been busy with the debut of the Tesla Model 3, his company’s affordably priced, mass-market car, as well as talking up plans to build a massive hyperloop tunnel connecting New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
Over the weekend, news broke that the couple had ended their year-long romance. Various theories emerged, including the idea that Musk was fed up with Heard’s behavior.
But in subsequent social media posts, Musk disputed that notion and said they remained friends and still love each other. Heard, meanwhile, thanked fans for their support “during these difficult, very human times.”
The two now are putting up a united front with their statement, in which they also address the ways that people around them and the media have mischaracterized their relationship:
“People occasionally send out speculation, which has no basis in fact, without our knowledge, believing that that they have our best interests in mind,” the statement says. “Sometimes, other agendas are at work. It can get a little weird.”
The statement adds: “It is worth bearing in mind that events are always amplified and dramatized in a high-profile relationship, whether the people involved like it or not (and we definitely don’t). The reality is that this is just a normal relationship with a giant magnifying glass applied.”
The bottom line message they want to put out: “We would like to state directly that we have the utmost respect for one another, and it would be troubling if anyone had the impression that we thought otherwise.”
Musk and Heard went public with their romance in April, following months of tabloid speculation that Heard was rebounding from her nasty high-profile split from actor Johnny Depp with the tech tycoon.
The two were first linked last summer after they were spotted out and about in London and Miami. Musk, who is worth an estimated $14 billion, has previously been married twice and has five sons with his first wife. He had just gotten out of a second marriage to British actress Talulah Riley.
