Toronto FC shows its strength handing the Galaxy another home defeat – Daily News

CARSON >> Toronto FC entered Saturday without two of its stars as Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore didn’t make the trip and it didn’t matter seem to matter too much.

TFC (18-3-8) had a pair in both the first and second half, handing the Galaxy a 4-0 defeat in front of 19,650 at StubHub Center, Saturday.

This the first victory for TFC at StubHub Center since 2008.

The victory gives TFC 62 points and puts the club one step closer toward clinching the Supporters’ Shield as the league’s top team.

For the Galaxy (7-15-6), the loss leaves them on 27 points and unless a miracle happens, all but kills any chances of making the playoffs. The Galaxy is 11 points behind the current final playoff spot in the Western Conference with six games remaining.

TFC opened the scoring in the 24th minute on Drew Moor’s header off of Victor Vazquez’s free kick that hit off the crossbar. Vazquez’s kick seemed the catch the Galaxy off-guard, leaving the slow to react to the rebound.

In the 37th minute, TFC struck again, this time with Tosaint Ricketts’ nifty toe touch that was just able to elude Galaxy goalkeeper Jon Kempin and trickle into the goal for a 2-0 lead.

The Galaxy’s chances were few and far between. In the second half, Ashley Cole played a through ball toward Giovani dos Santos, but with the goalkeeper rushing out, he wasn’t able to get the ball on target.

In the 76th minute, Ricketts scored his second game to seal all three points for TFC. Victor Vazquez poured salt into the Galaxy’s wounds with a goal in the 78th minute.

The Galaxy was without both Jermaine Jones and Romain Alessandrini due to yellow card accumulation. The game did have the debut of Michael Ciani. Ciani, who recently played in France’s Ligue 1, started on the back line, going the full 90 minutes.

The Galaxy will embark on a three-city road trip, starting Wednesday against Atlanta United FC. The trip will also take them to Sporting Kansas City (Sept. 24) and concludes against Houston, Sept. 27.

The next home game is Sept. 30 against Real Salt Lake.
