What’s happening in and around the city this week

City gets newsy

The city is about to launch a monthly newsletter called the “Saratoga Source,” featuring news updates, a NextDoor digest of popular items, upcoming events, tips from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and from city staff members.

Residents can sign up to receive the newsletter at saratoga.ca.us/SaratogaSource. The quarterly Saratogan will become an annual publication for release in January or February.

Distinguished Budget award

The Government Finance Officers Association awarded the city of Saratoga the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for Fiscal Year 2016-17 and the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for Fiscal Year 2015-16. These awards are considered the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting, accounting and financial reporting.

Low takes on president’s tweeted ban

Assemblymember Evan Low (D), the chair of California’s Legislative LGBT Caucus, issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s ban on transgender people serving in the military on July 26:

“Donald Trump’s bogus budgetary excuse is an attempt to legitimize discrimination against transgender people who put their lives on the line for our country,” Low said. “To those of you who feel attacked by the Trump administration’s hateful policies and rhetoric, the California Legislative LGBT Caucus wants you to know that we have your back, and we will never stop defending your right to be your true self.”
